MUST VISIT
FISH TANK
Level: Open Water Diver
Distance from Centara Ras Fushi: 60 minutes by dhoni
The fish tank is known as one of the most thrilling dive sites anywhere in the world. A sandy slope starts at 5 meters and goes down to 25 meters or deeper with some rocks on the sandy slope. More than 50 stingrays sometimes swim around the divers and all the rocks are occupied by different species of moray eels. After exploring the sandy slope, divers can follow the reef with schools of fusiliers, banner fish, barracudas and many other tropical reef fish. This is one unforgettable diving experience.
GIRAAVARU KUDA HAA THILA
Level: Open Water Diver
Distance from Centara Ras Fushi: 5 minutes
There are two peaks over a length of about 100 meters and, although the thila does not have as many spectacular rock features as other sites do, it is a Marine Protected Area. The fish life is as prolific and diverse as any reef in the Maldives. The twin peaks rise from the atoll floor to 10 meters and 8 meters, and among the delicate coral on the reef top, there are numerous species of damselfish. Circling above the reef are large schools of flame bassets and blue-striped snappers. There is also a lot of freckled hawkfish, long-nose filefish, scorpion fish, and, of course, sharks and giant trevally hunting their prey.
LANKAN MANTA POINT
Level: Open Water Diver
Distance from Centara Ras Fushi: 75 mins by dhoni
The Lankan Finolhu Manta Point has a worldwide reputation as being one of the most consistent sites for attracting large numbers of manta rays. Several large coral rocks at 15-20 meters at the southeast corner of the Lankan Finolhu reef mark the point where mantas converge during the southwest monsoon season (from April to December). These rocks are one giant cleaning station for the mantas. Blue-streak cleaner wrasse, often working in pairs, can be observed swimming out to the hovering mantas to remove old skin and parasites.
